"John Carter" is a visually stunning film that explores the adventures of an American Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to Mars. The movie received generally positive reviews from critics, but underperformed at the box office.

John Carter is not a perfect film. The pacing stumbles in the first 20 minutes, and the marketing was disastrous. However, the world-building is spectacular, the motion-capture work for the Tharks is groundbreaking (even by today’s standards), and Michael Giacchino’s score is heroic.
