The first Saturday back. The Head Girl (always a St. Ursula’s student – our schools have been “paired” since 1972) invites the entire Upper Sixth boys to “afternoon croquet on the south lawn.” Sounds civilised. Except the boys are told, via a handwritten note on cream paper, that dress code is “Whites, but without the jackets.” Translation: White polo shirt, white shorts, white socks, white plimsolls. No blazer. No jumper. No dignity. The girls arrive in full winter wool: navy kilts, burgundy blazers, silk scarves, tights, brogues. They bring umbrellas even if it’s sunny. They sip mulled cider. We mow the lawn. And every time a boy misses a wicket, a prefect rings a little brass bell and says, “Lower your standards, Dunstanian.” It’s a game. It’s not a game. A formal tie (for those in collared shirts)
